How to Build a Winning Ad from Your Best-Performing Creative

You have 30 ads running across your account. Some are printing money. Some are bleeding it. A few are breaking even and taking up space in the learning phase.

Here's the question most advertisers can't answer: do you know WHY your winners are winning?

Is it because they grab attention immediately? Because they hold people's focus? Because they drive clicks at efficient prices? Or because they convert cold traffic into buyers?

Most people never know. They look at ROAS, see one ad at 4.2x and another at 1.8x, and assume the high-ROAS ad is the winner they should scale. Then they dump budget into it and watch performance collapse because they didn't understand what was actually working—or when it works.

The Problem with "Just Scale the Winners"

ROAS alone doesn't tell you much. A high-ROAS ad might be coasting on retargeting traffic or showing only to people who already know your brand. The problem isn't that you need more data—you're drowning in data. The problem is you need the right data, structured in a way that tells you where each ad excels in the customer journey.

The Four Scores That Tell the Full Story

Every ad moves people through a funnel: attention, interest, action, conversion. Most advertisers only measure the endpoints (impressions and purchases) while ignoring everything in between.

To understand what makes an ad actually work, you need four distinct measurements that map to each stage:

Hook Score: Do people stop scrolling?

Hook Score measures thumbstop rate for video ads—the percentage of people who see your ad and stop to watch it. Meta calls this metric "ThruPlays" divided by impressions, but what matters is the benchmark: 30% or higher is excellent, 25-30% is good, 15-25% is average, and below 15% means your ad is invisible.

High Hook Score means your creative has pattern-interrupt. The opening frame, motion, or concept makes people stop their scroll. This is critical for cold audiences who have never heard of you—if you can't hook them in the first second, nothing else matters.

But Hook Score alone doesn't mean the ad sells. It just means it gets attention. Some of the best attention-grabbing ads convert terribly because the hook is disconnected from the offer.

Hold Score: Do they keep watching?

Hold Score measures whether people who start watching your video ad actually finish it. It combines two metrics: 75% for hold rate (ThruPlays divided by 3-second views) and 25% for completion rate (100% video views divided by impressions).

Hold rate above 40% is excellent—you hooked them AND kept them engaged. Completion rate above 25% is rare and valuable—a quarter of everyone who saw your ad watched the entire thing.

High Hold Score means your story or value proposition resonates. People aren't just stopping—they're invested enough to hear you out. This correlates strongly with message-market fit. If people stop watching halfway through, your hook made a promise your content didn't deliver.

Hold Score only applies to video ads. For static images, this metric is irrelevant—which is why you need multiple scores, not a single "creative quality" metric.

Click Score: Do they take action?

Click Score combines click-through rate (60%) and cost per click (40%). CTR tells you what percentage of people who see your ad click it. CPC tells you how much you're paying for those clicks.

CTR benchmarks: 4% or higher is excellent, 2.5-4% is good, 1.5-2.5% is average, 0.8-1.5% is below average, and under 0.8% means your ad isn't compelling enough to act on. CPC benchmarks: $0.30 or less is excellent, $0.30-0.80 is good, $0.80-1.50 is average, $1.50-3.00 is expensive, and above $3.00 is bleeding money.

High Click Score means your creative drives intent. People see it, want what you're offering, and click to learn more. This is where your offer strength shows up. A great Hook and Hold with terrible Click usually means your creative is entertaining but your offer is weak or unclear.

Click Score applies to all ad formats—images, videos, carousels. It's the universal measure of "does this creative make people want to engage?"

Convert Score: Do they buy?

Convert Score measures ROAS using the same benchmarks you already know: 5x or higher is excellent, 3-5x is good, 1.5-3x is average, 1-1.5x is below break-even, and under 1x is losing money.

High Convert Score means your landing page, offer, and product deliver on what the ad promised. This is the only score that directly measures business outcomes—everything else is a proxy for engagement.

But Convert Score is also the most misleading in isolation. An ad with 10x ROAS on $50 spend might just be showing to your warmest audiences. An ad with 2x ROAS on $5,000 spend might be your actual workhorse. You need spend volume context to interpret Convert Score correctly.

Why All Four Scores Require $50 Minimum Spend

  • Statistical significance: Below $50, sample sizes are too small to be meaningful. A 30% thumbstop rate on 200 impressions is noise. A 30% thumbstop rate on 5,000 impressions is signal.
  • Learning phase noise: New ads perform erratically until Meta's algorithm finds the right audience. Under $50, you're measuring Meta's learning, not your creative's true performance.
  • Audience mix matters: Small spend samples often hit unrepresentative audience segments. Sufficient spend ensures your scores reflect actual performance across the target audience.

Reading the Scores: What Each Combination Means

Individual scores tell you something. Score combinations tell you everything.

High Hook, Low Convert: The Attention Trap

Hook Score 82, Convert Score 31. People stop scrolling, but they don't buy. This pattern means your creative grabs attention with a premise that doesn't match your offer. Classic example: "You won't believe what happened next" hooks that lead to a product with no connection to the teaser.

These ads feel like winners because engagement metrics look great. But they burn budget acquiring clicks from curiosity, not intent. The fix isn't more budget—it's aligning your hook with your offer or finding a different angle.

Low Hook, High Convert: The Warm Audience Winner

Hook Score 44, Convert Score 88. People who see this ad don't stop scrolling often—but when they do, they buy. This is a retargeting all-star or a product-focused ad that only resonates with people who already understand the problem.

These ads work brilliantly on warm audiences and fail on cold traffic. If you scale them into prospecting campaigns, performance craters because you're trying to reach people who need the hook you don't have. The fix: keep these ads in retargeting or warm lookalikes, and build different creative for cold acquisition.

High Hook, High Hold, Low Click: The Engagement Mirage

Hook Score 86, Hold Score 79, Click Score 38. People stop, watch, enjoy—and do nothing. Your creative is entertaining but your call-to-action is weak or your offer isn't compelling enough to leave the platform.

This is the most frustrating pattern because it feels close. You've nailed storytelling but failed to convert interest into action. The fix: stronger CTA, clearer value proposition, or reducing friction (like "Shop Now" instead of "Learn More").

High Across All Four: The True Winner

Hook Score 81, Hold Score 73, Click Score 68, Convert Score 84. This ad stops people, keeps them engaged, drives clicks at efficient prices, and converts those clicks into revenue. This is what you're hunting for—creative that works at every stage of the funnel.

True winners are rare. Most ads excel at one or two stages and struggle with the rest. When you find one, you don't just scale the ad—you study it. What makes the hook work? Why does it hold attention? What about the offer or CTA drives clicks? What's the message-match between ad and landing page?

Understanding what makes a true winner work lets you replicate the pattern, not just the ad.

As you review Creative Studio, you'll spot patterns: this video has consistent 80+ Hook Score across multiple ad sets. This image has 4.5x ROAS in three different campaigns. This carousel holds attention better than anything else you've tested.

Star them. Every asset in Creative Studio has a star button. Click it, and the creative goes into your starred collection—a permanent inventory of proven performers that works across campaigns, ad sets, and time periods.

Starring is smarter than bookmarking ads in Ads Manager because it tracks the creative itself, not the ad instance. That same video might be running in five different ad sets under different names. Starring deduplicates automatically—you star once, and it knows that creative is a winner everywhere it appears.

Building a Performance Set

You've identified your winners across Hook, Hold, Click, and Convert. You've starred 5-8 of your best-performing creatives. Now you need to turn that collection into a scalable campaign structure.

This is where most people go back to Ads Manager and manually recreate everything—selecting the winning images and videos one by one, setting up ad sets, configuring targeting, writing copy. It's tedious, error-prone, and slow enough that you procrastinate doing it.

Every ad has a lifecycle. It starts fresh—Hook Scores are high, people haven't seen it before, engagement is strong. As impressions accumulate and frequency climbs, performance degrades. Thumbstop rate drops because your target audience has seen the ad multiple times. Conversion rate declines because you've already reached the most interested buyers.

This is creative fatigue, and it's inevitable. The question isn't whether your winning ads will fatigue—it's when, and whether you'll catch it before it costs you.

  3. Retire fatigued assets: When starred creative hits Fatigued status or scores drop below 50 in multiple categories, unstar it and pause the ad. Don't let zombie creative burn budget.
  4. Rebuild Performance Sets: Every 4-6 weeks, audit your Performance Set creative. Remove fatigued assets, add newly-starred winners, and relaunch. Campaign structure stays the same; creative rotates.
  5. Study patterns: As you rotate creative, track what works. Are video ads consistently outscoring images on Hook but underperforming on Convert? Are lifestyle shots beating product shots on Click? Use these insights to guide future creative production.

This cycle turns creative testing from a occasional project into a continuous system. You're always identifying winners, always rotating in fresh creative, always scaling what works and killing what doesn't. The four-score framework makes this sustainable because you're not guessing—you're following the data.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • High-ROAS ads with low spend: If an ad shows 8x ROAS but only spent $47, it hasn't met the $50 minimum for meaningful scores. Don't star it yet—wait for more data.
  • Declining scores across multiple categories: When an asset drops from green badges to amber or orange across Hook, Click, and Convert simultaneously, fatigue is setting in. Prepare replacement creative.
  • High Hook with low everything else: Attention-grab ads that don't convert are budget traps. Don't star them just because Hook Score is green—you need balanced performance.
  • Inconsistent performance across placements: Check the detail view. An ad might have great scores overall but terrible performance in Feed or Stories specifically. Placement-level data prevents false winners.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Even with a clear framework, it's easy to misuse creative scoring if you don't understand the nuances.

Mistake: Starring based on one score alone

Don't star an ad just because it has Hook Score 91 if Click and Convert are both in the 20s. Attention without action is waste. Look for balanced performers or assets that excel in adjacent categories (like Hook+Hold or Click+Convert).

Mistake: Ignoring spend volume

Scores require $50 minimum for reliability, but $50 isn't enough to validate scaling. An ad with great scores on $50 might be a fluke. An ad with great scores on $500+ is proven. Check spend volume in the detail view before starring.

Mistake: Mixing cold and warm creative

An ad optimized for retargeting (low Hook, high Convert) doesn't belong in a cold-traffic Performance Set. And a cold-traffic ad (high Hook, lower Convert) will underperform in retargeting. Segment your starred creative by intended audience temperature.

Mistake: Building Performance Sets too large

6-8 ads per Performance Set is optimal. Below 4, you're not giving Meta enough creative options for algorithmic optimization. Above 10, you're diluting the learning signal and making it harder to diagnose performance issues. If you have 15 starred winners, build two Performance Sets.

Mistake: Never retiring creative

Starred creative isn't permanent. As assets fatigue, unstar them and remove them from active Performance Sets. Keeping zombie creative in rotation because it "used to work" drags down your overall campaign performance. Be ruthless about retiring underperformers.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Here's a real example of the workflow in action:

You log into Creative Studio on Monday morning. You have 42 ads running across 8 campaigns. You filter to assets with at least $50 spend and sort by Convert Score. Three video ads show green Convert badges (75+) with amber or better scores in Hook and Click. You star all three.

You switch the sort to Hook Score and filter to 80+. Five more assets appear—mostly videos. You click into each one to check detail.
